What is Pilates?
The
method originates from the work of the late Joseph Pilates. A frail child,
he studied many forms of physical fitness to formulate a system that worked
his own body. His fitness studio in New York set up in the 1920s lured
the 'elite' of the city. All were attracted to a workout that recognised
individual needs, built strength without bulk and balanced strength with
flexibility to achieve the perfect harmony between mind and muscle.
From the outset pilates has been contained within the professional sport
and dance field. Pilates is medically approved and particularly safe for
those with back problems. Its consistent success rate has brought it to
the attention of physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and GPs.
How does Pilates work?
Pilates involves both mental and physical training to achieve an awareness
and control of the body. Through a rhythmic and balanced workout, the
core postural muscles are strengthened, muscle imbalances are corrected
and the body is realigned to look longer and leaner and to work more efficiently.
Pilates avoids muscle and ligament damage sometimes associated with other
regimes and is used by many rehabilitation programmes in dance, sport
and general practice.
Who
is it suitable for?
Pilates is suitable for people from 12 to 80, male and female, and will
suit any level of fitness. It is recommended as a means of rehabilitation,
is suitable for back pain sufferers and is a safe and effective way to
exercise during and after pregnancy. It is ideal for professional sports
people, dancers and actors wishing to enhance their performance and indeed
anyone wanting to improve their fitness, posture and appearance. Pilates
can even help those with stress related illnesses.
