Ten Years of Pilates on the Island
Shirley Robertson OBE helped the Island Pilates Centre celebrate its 10 year anniversary in June 2008.
Owners Alison Beardsall and Kim Davey-Sinclair introduced Pilates to the Island back in 1998 – a time when many people didn’t know what Pilates was or how it could help them. But word of Kim and Alison’s skills quickly found them with a growing number of clients successfully practicing the technique.
“Some of those original clients are still with us,” says Alison “still practising Pilates as part of their fitness and well-being regime.”
There were many sceptics about the value of Pilates in the early days but a growing number of Island doctors and health experts have come to see the benefits of referring patients to the Pilates Centre. “I think our training has helped,” explains Kim, “we have been working with the BPCA (Body Control Pilates Association) from the beginning, making sure our techniques are right.” And health professionals are not alone in endorsing the centre.

The UK head of the BPCA, and international Pilates author, Lyn Robinson, considers the Island Pilates Centre to be ‘a shining example, one of our flagship studios.” Such praise has attracted many clients including Olympic Gold Medal winner Shirley Robertson who was on hand to break open the Champagne on the day. “A huge congratulations. Your passion for Pilates and people is infectious. I’m sure the next ten years will be plain sailing.”
